Mariam’s Journey From Carer to Creative Entrepreneur
When Mariam joined our ACE English Writing course last year, her goal was simple — to build the skills and confidence needed to update her resume and cover letter so she could return to the workforce after spending time as a carer for a family member.
As a devoted carer and the primary source of support for her family, Mariam had spent years putting others first. Along the way, she contributed to her community through volunteering and election work. But there was still a personal dream she hadn’t pursued — her passion for jewellery making.
Mariam’s handmade jewellery
Through our ACE courses and Boost Business Program, Mariam began to reconnect with her own aspirations. By building new relationships, sharing ideas, and learning alongside others, she gradually rediscovered her confidence and found her voice again. These connections encouraged her to believe in herself and explore how her creativity could grow into something more.
For many years, Mariam had wondered how to turn her love of creating jewellery into a business. With ongoing support, mentoring, and practical opportunities through our Boost program, she was able to take that next step.
Earlier this year, Mariam proudly showcased her handmade pieces at her very first market stall during the Harmony Week Market — a milestone moment in her journey.

Now, Mariam is continuing to build on that experience. She will be trading at the upcoming Souk Market at Tonsley this Saturday, 20 June from 10am, where she will share her unique semi-precious stone jewellery alongside other local makers and small businesses.
Mariam’s story is one of resilience, courage, and determination. Despite the challenges she has faced, she has shown incredible strength in stepping outside her comfort zone, embracing new opportunities, and believing in her own potential. Her journey is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to rediscover a passion, develop new skills, and create a different future.
We are incredibly proud of Mariam and excited to see her continue to grow.

““I’m very passionate about semi-precious stone jewellery making, and I’m very proud that I participated in the Harmony Week market. It was a really enjoyable multicultural experience. I got to meet new people and learn new experiences. People really liked my handmade jewellery pieces and told me that they were stunning.””
We warmly invite our community to come along to the Souk Market, support local businesses, and meet Mariam in person.
